Summary

A very entertaining comedy manga！ Way better than Attack on Titan

I had heard of this series for a while， and finally got around to reading the first volume， to see what it was really like。I didn't care for the really weird slapstick reactions in the training sessions， but the main story itself was really interesting。 The main character had failed on an attempt to join the defense force that defends Japan from kaiju attacks。 Instead， he ended up working on one of the crews that does the cleanup after the attacks， including dismembering the kaiju bodies for use I had heard of this series for a while， and finally got around to reading the first volume， to see what it was really like。I didn't care for the really weird slapstick reactions in the training sessions， but the main story itself was really interesting。 The main character had failed on an attempt to join the defense force that defends Japan from kaiju attacks。 Instead， he ended up working on one of the crews that does the cleanup after the attacks， including dismembering the kaiju bodies for useful parts。 That's not as cool or glamorous， but still useful。 Then， one day， he gets。。。um。。。infected？ I guess that's how you'd put it， but that part doesn't make sense yet。 The result is that he gets some of the powers of a kaiju， but with the downside that he looks like a human-sized kaiju while using them。 Only。。。well， there's more to it than that， but the story is actually intriguing， and has introduced a few characters that will make it worth reading more。 I think I will continue to read this series。 。。。more

A great new addition to the modern wave of Shonen manga。 This volume was a ton of fun， and made me laugh a few times。 Sort of feels like a superhero take on Attack on Titan。 Curious to see how Kafka's powers develop， and if we're going the Ultraman route or not。 Great characters， Kinoku is already a personal favorite。 Let's go！ A great new addition to the modern wave of Shonen manga。 This volume was a ton of fun， and made me laugh a few times。 Sort of feels like a superhero take on Attack on Titan。 Curious to see how Kafka's powers develop， and if we're going the Ultraman route or not。 Great characters， Kinoku is already a personal favorite。 Let's go！ 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 This is a review of the entirety of Kaiju No。 8， up to Chapter 68， not just Volume 1。 Anime: Announced （TBD）Chapters: 68 （on-going）Who would like this？: If you liked the newer Godzilla movies and/or Pacific Rim， you will enjoy this manga。 Keep in mind that is enhanced humans， not robots， fighting giant monsters。 Synopsis: The world is plagued by Kaiju that regularly emerge from unknown origins。 The Japanese government has an elite squad of soldiers， that are enhanced with Kaiju based suits/weapo This is a review of the entirety of Kaiju No。 8， up to Chapter 68， not just Volume 1。 Anime: Announced （TBD）Chapters: 68 （on-going）Who would like this？: If you liked the newer Godzilla movies and/or Pacific Rim， you will enjoy this manga。 Keep in mind that is enhanced humans， not robots， fighting giant monsters。 Synopsis: The world is plagued by Kaiju that regularly emerge from unknown origins。 The Japanese government has an elite squad of soldiers， that are enhanced with Kaiju based suits/weapons， called the Defense Force。 Our Main Character， Kafka Hibino， always wanted to join the Defense Force but failed every time。 Eventually he quit his dreams and became a Cleaner; Cleaners are the squads that show up after a battle to dismember and clean up the mess left by Kaiju's。 Kafka is tasked with training a new recruit， Leno Ichikawa。 At the end of their first shift， their lives change forever。 Panda Thoughts （**as of Chapter 68**）: It's a super refreshing take on the giant monster genre， at least from my limited exposure to it。 It has a great monster ranking system， as well as power rankings for the human soldiers。 Without spoiling too much， the suits and weapons are fantastic; especially the numbered weapons。 So far， the main character is easy to relate to， even more if you're older because he is in his thirties。 Additionally， neither the main character， or any character that I remember， is pervy。 The manga balances how it tackles common identity issues， like imposter syndrome， and common life questions， while balancing it with humor and phenomenal fights。 I don't want to speak towards the female representation， mostly because I don't think it's my place to make that judgement， nor do I have the experience to say "This is a well written woman"。 What I can say is that I felt the female characters shine in this manga and while they have moments of being in distress， those moments become a catalyst for them to become among the strongest of the supporting characters; enough that calling them "supporting" characters feels like an insult because they are such a core component of the manga。 None of the relationships are hindered by romance， use romance as a crutch， or have the goal of "conquering" the opposite sex。 This comes as a huge relief to me personally because characters written with romantical undertones tend to rely on being saved more than growth。 Overall， this is a strong manga that I think most people can enjoy。 I'm disappointed that I slept on it for so long and with the recent anime announced， I am excited for it's main stream success。 If you have the time and resources， I highly suggest reading it！ 。。。more

I was so surprised at seeing a 32 year old protagonist but I loved it。 The ending was a cliffhanger so I literally bought vol2 online as soon as I finished。
